How Do Thinkific's Payment Fees Work in 2026?

This is Thinkific's most misunderstood pricing element, and it is still in force. If you process payments through your own Stripe rather than Thinkific Payments, Thinkific charges a third-party payment gateway fee on every transaction: 5% on Basic, 2% on Start, 1% on Grow. It applies in the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, and stops only after your first $1M in sales in a calendar year. Move to Thinkific Payments and the fee disappears — you pay about 2.9% processing, in line with Stripe, plus 0.5% on US, Canadian, UK and EU sales for Thinkific's sales tax and VAT handling.

No Permanent Free Plan

Thinkific retired its permanent free plan; you get a 30-day trial of the full platform instead. In 2026 it added a Basic tier at $40/month annual ($54 monthly) below Start ($82/month annual, $109 monthly) and Grow ($164/month annual, $219 monthly), with a custom Plus tier above. Read the Basic plan carefully before you budget for it: it has no completion certificates, no graded assignments, no live cohorts, no memberships and no payment plans. All of those start on Start, which makes $82/month the real entry price for teaching a structured course.

The Mobile App Add-On

Thinkific's branded mobile app is listed as included on select Plus contracts. Thinkific no longer publishes an add-on price for it on the pricing page, so treat any figure you find elsewhere as unconfirmed and ask sales.

Thinkific's course builder earns a 4.5/5 on G2 across 402+ reviews, with consistent praise for ease of use. One G2 reviewer described it as "really easy to use even if you are not a technological boffin." Capterra reviewers highlight the same theme — the platform lets teams launch courses without technical skills.

SCORM compliance (on the custom-priced Plus plan) makes Thinkific a legitimate option for corporate training, which most competitors can't match. This is a real differentiator for professional development programs.

Common Complaints

"The payment fee trap is real if you don't use TCommerce. It becomes a silent tax on every sale."

This is the most common complaint, and nothing about it has been fixed: creators on r/OnlineBusiness described being pushed toward Thinkific's own processor, and one Trustpilot reviewer reported "hidden transaction fees of 6-9%" despite the "0% transaction fees" marketing — because the own-Stripe fee is not prominently disclosed. Thinkific's own fee documentation still carries its 2024 rollout dates unchanged.

A Trustpilot reviewer in September 2025 reported that Thinkific held their funds for 90 days on a second account — despite having over $1 million in prior sales history on their first account. Payment processing issues like this are particularly damaging for creators who depend on timely payouts.

A January 2026 Trustpilot reviewer describes a frustrating pattern: even after upgrading plans, important features are continually moved to yet more expensive tiers. The platform becomes more limiting, not less, as you invest more. With this kind of feature-gating, the plan price isn't what Thinkific ends up costing you — it's the plan you eventually need to reach.

Billing reliability is also a concern. Multiple March 2026 Trustpilot reviews report continued charges after cancellation, with at least one user describing the platform blocking card deletion from within the account. A separate user reports being charged €97 for a plan never activated with zero activity. Reviewers describe these as charges they never authorized, not pricing disagreements.

The mobile app add-on also draws criticism. At $199/month on top of plan fees, reviewers note the app has significant feature gaps — students can view content, but key lesson types, community features, and in-app purchasing are missing.

The Migration Question

Thinkific allows student list exports and basic content downloads, but there's no one-click course export. Hosted videos require downloading each individually via links. Active subscriptions cannot be migrated, and transaction reporting only covers Thinkific Payments transactions. If you're using SCORM content, ensure your new platform supports it. Migration typically takes 2-4 weeks.
