How Do Thinkific's Payment Fees Work in 2026?

This used to be Thinkific's most misunderstood pricing element. Through 2025, Thinkific charged a surcharge — 5% on the old Basic plan, 2% on Start, 1% on Grow — if you connected your own Stripe instead of using Thinkific Payments. In 2026 that surcharge was removed in primary markets like the US. Today you pay 0% to Thinkific on every plan, whichever processor you use — just standard Stripe (about 2.9% + $0.30).

The one catch: in some countries Thinkific charges a regional fee you can avoid by using Thinkific Payments. And there's still a structural trade-off — subscriptions run through Thinkific Payments are tied to Thinkific (a portability question, much like Kajabi Payments), while your own Stripe keeps them yours. No Permanent Free Plan

Thinkific retired its permanent free plan; you get a 30-day trial of the full platform instead. Its main plans are Start ($74/month annual, $99 monthly) and Grow ($149/month annual), with Expand and a custom Plus tier above. The upside: the Start plan is full-featured — certificates, assignments, payment plans, memberships, and live events are all included, where they used to require an upgrade. The downside is that there's no permanent free plan once the trial ends.

The Mobile App Add-On

Thinkific offers a branded mobile app, but it's a separate add-on at $199/month — a standalone subscription on top of your plan fee. On the Start plan ($74/mo annual), adding the mobile app brings your total to $273/month.

SCORM compliance (on the custom-priced Plus plan) makes Thinkific a legitimate option for corporate training, which most competitors can't match. This is a real differentiator for professional development programs.

Under Thinkific's pre-2026 pricing, this was the most common complaint: creators on r/OnlineBusiness described being pushed toward Thinkific's own processor, and one Trustpilot reviewer reported "hidden transaction fees of 6-9%" despite the "0% transaction fees" marketing — because the own-Stripe surcharge wasn't prominently disclosed. Thinkific removed that surcharge in primary markets in 2026, so it no longer applies to new US creators.

A Trustpilot reviewer in September 2025 reported that Thinkific held their funds for 90 days on a second account — despite having over $1 million in prior sales history on their first account. Payment processing issues like this are particularly damaging for creators who depend on timely payouts.

The platform becomes more limiting, not less, as you invest more. With this kind of feature-gating, the plan price isn't what Thinkific ends up costing you — it's the plan you eventually need to reach.

Billing reliability is also a concern. Multiple March 2026 Trustpilot reviews report continued charges after cancellation, with at least one user describing the platform blocking card deletion from within the account. A separate user reports being charged €97 for a plan never activated with zero activity. Reviewers describe these as charges they never authorized, not pricing disagreements.

The Migration Question

Thinkific allows student list exports and basic content downloads, but there's no one-click course export. Hosted videos require downloading each individually via links.
